It was a slamming evening!

Originating in the 1980s, Slam Poetry’s an artistic movement that has people from all corners of the globe slamming their spoken word! Combining the elements of performance, writing, competition and participation, Slam Poetry is fun, energetic and a guaranteed good time!

Slam Poetry by older people is about to rock the nation! After the success of Queensland’s Gran Slam event earlier this year ZestFest jumped on board and introduced Slam Poetry to its line up in this year’s festival!

With the generous support of Spoken Word, the South Australian leaders of Slam Poetry, ZestFest proudly held its inaugural Seniors Slam, in an early heatwave, on Thursday 24 October at the Kings Head hotel. The event was headlined by 10 Poets all aged over 50 who slammed their own spoken word. Combining elements of performance, writing, competition and participation they gave their all! Caroline Reid took out first prize with a cutting piece on the topic of Royal Commission into Aged Care with Nigel Ford the runner up with Save a kick-arse performance of his work. The atmosphere was intimate and trusting, new connections were made, and new skills were displayed, the beer was cold and the night was warm… it was truly a great evening!
